BadlandsDo you have a junior paleontologist in your tribe? The west offers some fascinating places that will thrill dinosaur lovers old and young.

This Mount Rushmore, Black Hills and Devils Tower trip includes some time in Hot Springs South Dakota where you will find the Mammoth Site. The Mammoth Site is the world’s largest mammoth research facility. You can tour an active paleontological dig site and view Ice Age fossils exhibited as they are found.

Open year round, the Mammoth Site offers the museum visitor a 30-minute guided tour plus a 10-minute video. Tour information features the Mammoth Site and Ice Age geology, paleontology, and paleoecology. Visitors to the museum observe first-hand scientific excavation.

Also included in this Mount Rushmore trip itinerary is Badlands National Park. For raw wilderness-lovers who enjoy scenery filled with stone buttes, mesas and towering spires, the Badlands National Park is certainly not bad! The banding and colors of the rocks as the light plays over them is just beautiful. For a more educational view, take the Fossil Exhibit Trail. There are displays and exhibits of the many fossils that have been found in the park and this is a great trail to take a guided tour on and see some of the presentations given by the park staff. Kids who love dinosaurs will enjoy this part!
