About Lake Louise
You may have some trouble taking photos without anyone in them during the park’s peak season, so to escape the crowds enjoy a shoreline hike away from Chateau Lake Louise and take in a bit more of the peace and tranquility that this beautiful spot offers. Better yet, rent a canoe and actually get out on the lake itself as you’ll get some really great photos from the water!
There are a number of hiking trails from Lake Louise. Hikes include Saddleback Pass, Fairview Mountain, Lake Agnes, and Devils Thumb, and some of these are also open to mountain biking and horseback riding. The two-hour Lake Louise horseback ride comes highly recommended. You’ll also find numerous places for rock climbing here, and during the winter there’s a top ski resort.
The Lake Louise Mountain Resort gondola is open year round and is an excellent way to travel up the mountain for stunning views. Alternatively there’s a gondola in Banff and one in the Jasper area if you want to save your camera for these!
Less than 9 miles outside the Village of Lake Louise is another gem of a lake – Moraine Lake features the same amazing blue colors that Louise does. Fantastic overhead views of the lake are easy to find via a short walk from the parking lot, or enjoy some of the longer hiking trails around the lake and beyond.
Interesting Facts About Lake Louise
- Lake Louise was named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta who was the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria, and wife to the Governor General of Canada.
- The beautiful emerald color of the water is a result of rock flour that is naturally carried into the lake each year by glacier melt waters.
