Home is where you park it, and in the summertime, that means any one of our nation’s incredible national parks. It also means RV adventurers of all ages can enjoy the great outdoors.
We like to beat the heat in summer and head to our favorite national parks out west.
Yellowstone National Park is the United States’ flagship national park and best known for its astonishing geysers. Stay in the heart of the activity at one of the park’s campgrounds, or find a little more space in one of the national forests outside of the park boundary. Yellowstone offers 1,100 miles of hiking trails and its own natural hot spring (the Boiling River), which may be less crowded in the summer months. Summer is also the perfect time for wolf sightings in Lamar Valley.
Drive two hours south and hit Grand Teton National Park, with its breathtaking vistas and clear mountain lakes. There are tons of summer events and activities for all ages in Jackson, which is overtaken by ski buffs in winter. Adventure seekers can raft the Snake River, kayak Jackson Lake, see the sights on horseback or head into the backcountry.
Yellowstone’s somewhat lesser-known neighbor to the north, Glacier National Park, is pure magic in the warm Montana summer months. Park at Whitefish Lake State Park in the idyllic town of Whitefish or go totally off the grid in the North Fork area and explore the quiet community of Polebridge. Hop on a Historic Red Bus Tour to Going-to-the-Sun road and Logan Pass. Kayak, canoe, paddle board, or rowboat on the majestic Lake McDonald.
Going west wouldn’t be the same without an RV adventure in Colorado. Gaze at the elk, moose and other wildlife, along with the high mountain peaks in Rocky Mountain National Park. Sign up for a guided cave tour at Glenwood Caverns, then play on the zipline or Alpine Coaster. Hike into the Maroon Bells Wilderness Area and star-gaze (for movie stars) around Aspen. Hit the famous mountain bike trails of Leadville.
Whatever summer RV adventure you choose, the scenic, wide-open, and stunning drives of America’s west will be well worth the journey.
