Ahhhh s’mores…. S’mores will always remind us of summer nights around the campfire. Roasting marshmallows to deep golden perfection without lighting them on fire is an artform only perfected with years of practice. 😉
Did you know the history of this treat goes back over 90 years? It seems no campfire is complete without this sticky campfire treat. To learn more about s’mores, read on!
Let’s start with the essential ingredient: marshmallows. Marshmallows were originally used for their healing properties in Ancient Egypt! Well… the sap of the Mallow Plant, anyway. (It’s more fun to think Marshmallows have healing properties.) In the Middle Ages, the roots of the plant were used to create candies, and the French eventually began to mass-produce the marshmallow that we know and love today.
The first official recipe for a s’more came out in the 1927 Girl Scout guidebook, “Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts.”its lasting legacy was the “Some More.” Nobody is sure when the name was shortened to simply “s’more,” but various Girl Scout publications kept referring to the treat as “Some More” until at least 1971. Maybe it’s because as people were enjoying these sticky treats, they literally couldn’t say “Some More” with gooey marshmallow in their mouths and it came out “s’more”. The best nicknames happen naturally!
Here are our favorite versions of this campfire classic!
Pro Tip – It is far better to cook your marshmallow over hot coals after the fire burns down a bit than to hold them over an open flame. (Of course, sugar torches have their own place in a proper campfire repertoire!)
